Effective search engine optimisation is essential for small businesses to thrive.

Beyond Rankings: Quality Traffic & Business Outcomes

Happy small business owner and her office team

Many SEO agencies focus purely on ranking and traffic, but they often use meaningless keywords that are simply easy to rank for, but don’t deliver any business. This may be OK for brands with huge budgets, but not for small and local businesses.

Instead, I relentlessly pursue traffic quality over quantity.

What does that mean for your small business?

It means attracting visitors who are genuinely interested in your products or services, ready to engage, and ultimately, become loyal customers.

Together, we will analyse your target audience, understand their search intent, and craft strategies that connect you with high-value leads.

No fluff: Our success is measured by tangible business outcomes – increased enquiries, more walk-ins, higher conversions, and a stronger bottom line for you. This is why I combine SEO with conversion rate optimisation, and sometimes online advertising, to get the best results.

What’s involved in SEO?

In case you wonder, here are some things that an SEO consultant does for you:

  • Ensure crawling: Search engines must be able to “crawl” your site – reading pages and following the links in them until the entire site is indexed. SEO includes identifying and resolving issues the prevent proper indexing.
  • Optimise page loading speed: Search engines reward fast sites with higher ranking. SEO includes making your site load faster.
  • Software maintenance: Search engines can detect out-of-date, insecure sites and avoid listing them in search results. SEO includes regular updates to the software components running your site.
  • “On page” optimisation: SEO ensures the clarity and keyword density of the visible, as well as hidden, parts of pages, which search engines use to “understand” the content.
  • “Off page” optimisation: Search engines consider links to a page as votes of confidence and indications of the page’s topic. SEO includes getting links from high-quality sites to a page, particularly with link texts containing the page’s focus keyword.
  • Content marketing: The more content a site has about a certain topic, the more authority it has. SEO includes writing optimised new pages, e.g. blog posts, that improve the site’s freshness, increase its size and target more searches.

How is SEO for small business different?

Small businesses lack the budget for branding and publishing large amounts of informational content, so SEO efforts are best spent on traffic with a commercial or transactional search intent. Typically, it also involves targeting a specific location and/or niche, where the small business has an advantage.

How long does it take to see SEO results?

You can typically expect to start seeing SEO results in 3-6 months, but significant results and higher rankings often take 6-12 months or even longer, depending on your industry, competition and the quality of your SEO efforts.

Is SEO better than paid advertising (SEM)?

SEO is like a heavy vehicle. It takes longer to get it up to speed and steer, but then, it rolls on smoothly an easily in the desired direction. Advertising, on the other hand, has an immediate and precise impact, but when you stop paying for it, the benefits stop as well.

I typically recommend advertising until there’s enough search traffic, and to use it to experiment with keywords, landing pages and ad copy, informing the SEO work about which ones perform best.

What is “technical SEO”?

This is the work that allows search bots to properly crawl the site, to make pages load as quickly as possible, and to help search engines “understand” the site. It also involves monitoring and fixing any indexing issues reported by Google from time to time and adapting to new SEO standards.

What are “search keywords”?

Those are phrases that people use in search engines to find information and resources, e.g. “SEO”. “On page” SEO is the work done to ensure that web pages contain relevant expressions enough times that search engines consider them relevant. This page, for example, contains the word “SEO” several times, as well as other supporting phrases.

What is a “long tail keyword”?

This is a search phrase with 3 or more words (e.g. roofing contractor brisbane), which is more specific than “broad” phrases with 1 or 2 words (e.g. roofer), and is therefore more likely to convert, despite getting less traffic.

What is “content marketing”?

It is the use of optimised pages to attract search traffic. For example, a small business about printer repairs can publish blog posts about printer models, maintenance procedures, tools of the trade, common faults and industry updates, thereby attracting potential customers to the site. They can also publish videos demonstrating repairs. Created content can then be further promoted via sharing on social media.

What is “link building”?

Search engines assume that linking to a web page is a signal of that page’s value. Therefore, getting links is part of “off page” SEO, which helps boost search ranking. But it’s not just about the number of links. Good links add value to the content they’re in, so they must be relevant, and they are placed on high quality sites. Bad links, e.g. on spammy sites. can seriously damage a site’s SEO, so link building should be done carefully and naturally.

What is “local SEO”?

Search results can appear in Google Maps, as well as in map results in Google Search, and showing up for location-specific searches is more targeted and more likely to convert. Local SEO involves optimising pages for location keyword phrases, as well as creating an optimised listing in Google My Business, listings in local directories and more.

How will I know my SEO is working?

Before optimisation starts, I will connect your website to Google Analytics and Google Search Console. These systems will track the site’s traffic and conversions continuously. If traffic and conversions go up over time, your SEO is working 🙂
